Bridget Sangster
Bridget was born in Vancouver, Canada. She spent 3 years at the University of Victoria as a biology undergraduate before attending the British Columbia Institute of Technology for Diagnostic Medical Radiography. She currently works full time at Vancouver
General
Hospital. Her travels include Europe, South East Asia, and most recently 6 months in Africa. She visited South Africa, Zimbabwe, Namibia, Zambia, Mozambique, and finally Uganda, where she volunteered with the Uganda Rural Fund. The Ugandan people immediately warmed her heart, and she was drawn to the beautiful lush landscapes. After 3 months in Kyetume, John Mary Lugemwa asked her to consider heading Uganda Rural Fund Canada. The rest is history...
Sonya Sangster
Sonya is an avid humanitarian, human rights activist, and promoter of public service and international justice. She has an undergraduate degree in business from the University of the Fraser
Valley and currently works as a full time commercial cargo pilot. She has a strong background in volunteering, having volunteered for various charities including the Delta Hospice Society, promoting Invisible Children, and Oxfam Canada. Sonya is currently the Oxfam Vancouver Public Services Campaign Coordinator, and a member of the BC/Yukon Regional steering committee for Oxfam Canada. Sonya believes that empowering people through giving them the tools to help themselves is the key to ending poverty.Sonya is planning on obtaining a Masters in International or International Rural Development in the near future, and also plans on traveling to Uganda in 2009 and 2010.
Scott Andrews
Scott has been interested in social justice and human rights since landscaping alongside a Noam Chomsky enthusiast and human rights activist in the summer of 2004. Many long conversations, debates and relevant books later, his world would turn upside down and Scott took to political, social and environmental activism. He first volunteered with Habitat for Humanity on the low income housing build centers in the Lower Mainland of British Columbia. Scott then became a member of Oxfam Canada in the fall of 2006. He has worked on an HIV/AIDS awareness campaign, various fundraising initiatives, recruited several new members and acted as the Public Services Campaign Coordinator from January 2008-June 2008. Scott is also a founding board member of Peace and Love International, a local NGO that supports multi-faith education in the occupied territories of Palestine.
On his recent trip to South East/South Asia Scott has volunteered teaching English and Computer classes in a locally funded community center in Laos. Scott is currently working on an Oxfam report for the WE CAN End Violence Against Women campaign in the Gujarat District of India and is heading to Kyetume in February 2009 to be the Program Director with the URF for a nine month term. Scott's plan upon returning to Vancouver is to begin the relevant coursework towards a degree in International Law with a focus on Corporate Social Responsibility in the realm of International Trade.
Ashley Forbes
Ashley Forbes has her Bachelors in Social Work (Indigenous Specialization) from the University of Victoria. She is currently working in East Vancouver as a Youth and Family Counsellor for the Boys and Girls Clubs of Greater Vancouver. Ashley loves travelling and has been to various parts of Asia, Europe, Central America and the Middle East. Ashley has worked with various NGO's in India on development projects to promote education and improve standards of living.
Jeff Anderson
Jeff has a biology background, and currently works in the environmental industry as an Ecologist after finishing his undergrad at the University of Victoria. He is an avid outdoorsman, and loves to hike, fish, surf and bike. Jeff had volunteered withYouth Challenge International in Vanuatu, focusing on health education and infrastructure. Working closely with the Peace Corps, he helped with the logistics and the construction of a community aid post. While construction was ongoing, he helped develop a program for health education, including; hygiene, sex education and family planning.
His key areas of interest are in sustainable growth, working with industry to promote responsible business, and he is passionate about intercultural relations, and in household water availability.
Briar Wilson
Briar Wilson has just completed her Bachelor of Commerce from Royal
Roads
University. She is currently a small business owner working with youth to encourage physical activity and to create a positive and safe place for them to grow up. Briar developed her passion for developmental work in 1999 when she traveled to Mexico with her youth group and saw, for the first time, the immediate need for change. She feels blessed to have grown up in Vancouver feeling safe, happy, and healthy.
Joe Salter
Joe Salter has a degree in mechanical engineering from the University of Victoria and is currently working towards earning his Chartered Accountant designation. He currently works at Price Waterhouse Coopers in Vancouver in the Audit and Assurance Group and has worked in a number of different engineering roles over the past four years in a variety of locations. He has lived in the Vancouver and Victoria areas for most of his life with short stops in Campbell River, BC and Bellingham, Washington.
Michelle Gerard
Michelle graduated in 2007 from Simon
Fraser
University with a Bachelor of Arts in Geography. She is currently working at an engineering firm, but ultimately aspires to work in strategic planning for sustainable development, with a focus on environmental stewardship and sustainable tourism. Michelle has travelled to Southeast Asia, New Zealand, Egypt, Kenya, Uganda, Rwanda, Tanzania, Zambia and South Africa. These trips combined have given her a love for the road, and for learning about the numerous ways of life around the world. She also volunteered with post-tsunami cleanup on Ko Phi Phi, Thailand in 2005. Besides traveling, in her spare time Michelle enjoys being outside (snowboarding, hiking, running, surfing), photography, and spending quality time with friends and family.
John Mary Lugemwa, OSB
John Mary holds a B.A. in Computer Science and Philosophy from St. John's
University. Besides spending a year at Law school back in Uganda, John Mary has taken classes in Non profit management at the University of Richmond's Institute on Philanthropy. John Mary is a member of the Benedictine Society of Virginia where he serves as an assistant in the finance office and as webmaster. During his college career, John Mary initiated the Africa Service Learning Program, a program that continues to send groups of college students to work with AIDS support organizations in East Africa. He also founded two student organizations: the Global AIDS Awareness Organization and the Africa Students Association at the St. Benedict's College and St. John's University, MN. John Mary was also active in other student clubs and student government. He sat on the Joint Academic Board and also served on various administration committees as a student representative: these included the Academic Assessment Committee, and the Curriculum and Academic Policies Committee.
John Mary received various awards for his work in Africa and the United States. He was the recipient of the International Peace Award in DC in 2007, the 2006 Excellence in Leadership Award and Inspiring a Shared Vision leadership Award from the College of St. Benedicts/St. John's University. He was one of the recipients of the Peace and Justice Award from the Vincent L. Hawkinson foundation, MN in 2006.
John Mary is enrolled in graduate school/seminary pursuing studies for the S.T.B and M.A programs leading to ordination and further academic work in Canon Law. John Mary is passionate about children and his work brings him much joy and peace knowing that his small deeds can make a difference in other people's lives.
