Piggery Project

In an effort to ensure a self-sustaining organization, we also established a pig-keeping project as one of the income generating activities supported by the Uganda Rural Community Support Foundation. Since our programs are rural based with the aim of serving the local communities, such a project is very practical and affordable. Pigs are among the common domestic livestock for most families in the rural areas. They are easy to raise because the feeds are readily available especially if they are raised on small-scale basis. However, since our programs are ever expanding envision a larger-scale operation. This would also call for more resources to purchase good quality feeds and big quantities.

Our goal is raise over 100 pigs. Right now we have 10 pigs and 14 piglets. The demand for pork is high so we are very much assured of the market. The project is not only intended for profit making but also to serve the local community. We reserve a number of piglets to be sold to the local people at lower prices to enable them start their own pig projects. If a poor family wishes to do the same, our program donates piglets to them as a way of supporting them start some income-generating project for the family. Our pigs are of high quality breed which would be quite expensive to most poor families; so by making them available at lower prices is one of building up community effort against poverty.

This project also act as a supplementary food supply source. On occasions pigs are slaughtered and prepared to be added at the children's meals.

As any of the other projects, this project also provides an opportunity for children to gain skills in pig-raring. The children help with feeding the pigs and doing some simple work around the facility. This also gives them a sense of ownership of the project knowing that they contribute something to the project.

The income generated from the sale of pigs is used for the project but part of it is used to support the children's activities and obtaining school supplies.
