  • The whole URF crew went out dancing on Friday night in Masaka.  Charles had a couple of girlfriends there…big surprise!  John is now known as Dance Master Flex, and Fred is Champ.  Melissa managed to purchase an old-school Winnipeg Jets jacket off the back of some local…how random!!!!
  • We attended an introduction on Sunday, where the MC told the 600-person crowd in Luganda that the Muzungu’s (white girls) were single, available, and looking…  Melissa then impressed the locals with some Latin dancing and made 3400 shillings (which apparently is a complement here, but she felt kinda cheap).

April 2008 Updates

Here are latest developments in Uganda:

- Allison Newburn, recent volunteer in Uganda devoloped a curriculum guide and ideas for teaching material documents for the after school program. They look really good. I think this will help future volunteers prepare for lessons. Before, some people felt lost and didnt what to teach and how because there were no  guidelines. We are now trying to make the program more formal. Remember it's a nine month old program and none of the guys on ground have teaching experience. It was an experimental thing. At the beginning of the program last summer, I never thought it would attract that many kids from several schools. I was more looking at the immediate villages.

- Bridget from Canada (but was in south africa before) arrived on April 01. She is a hard working woman as well and she is interested in zeroing in on the women's program. Bridget is creating individual files to document all students in the after school program. Melissa from canada will also arrive on the 14th-- then several others in may and subquent months.

- The furniture for the library, computer lab, and office was brought in last week. Eerything is set up waiting for more computer monitors and books. I will be posting pictures soon.

- A donation from St. Mary's Episcopal Church youth group in Richmond and Williams College in MA  was used to purchase textbooks in kampala. A volunteer in kla compiled a list of texts required by education ministry for primary and secondary schools. A single copy of curriculum required texts were obtained for the initial acquisition.

-Funds from boston univiversity went to support womens project. They will obtain 3 more pregnant pigs to give groups of women.

- $1000 went toward start up of a chicken project.

- Then $1500 to finish a room for the office use at the school. The office furniture is already on site. They just need to fix up the room. This will make things more organized and provide dedicated space for volunteers to work from.

- Jeannette from CA raised some funds from a marathon. The funds are going to cover majority of items on the nazareth children's wish list, finish pig pen, obtain drugs for the cow, and some emergency money for the home.

- A student group at the college of st. benedict and st. john's university in MN are raising funds to buy a cow for the child-headed family (Zaituni and brother). Five other students have received long term sponsors, some of whom are sending them to good boarding schools.

- The engineers with boarders team from minnesota will be in Uganda during June to implement the water and sanitation project at Hope. The power team at Virginia wont travel utill Dec. They are to implement a solar power system. I visited the group at VT a week ago and saw more than several solar panels already donated by local company and VT engineering school.

- I have redesigned both websites: www.ugandaruralfund.org and www.hopeacademyuganda.org  Give me some feedback please.
